Some hopeful news on the water front, plus what to do while you wait.

Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Utilities now hopes to finish repairing Wednesday's water main break by Friday morning, "assuming that we don't hit any other major challenges," said Utilities Director Courtney Driver. The break hit about half of Forsyth County, roughly 200,000 people. Just reaching the damaged pipe was a job in itself: it sits 40 feet underground and beneath a manmade pond in a remote spot. Once the repair is done, water testing takes about 18 hours, and only after those results clear with regulators can the boil-water advisory be lifted. In other words, keep boiling or using bottled water until you hear the official all-clear.

If you need water today, help is close by. On Thursday, the county and the American Red Cross ran a drive-thru site at Kernersville Elementary, one case per car, and handed out hundreds of cases by mid-morning. Other distribution points included Griffith Elementary, Kennedy High, Walkertown High and the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office. Check the city and county channels for today's hours and locations, since sites can change as the situation improves.

The community has been pitching in too. Food Lion Feeds donated nearly 1,600 cases of bottled water to the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina, with more coming from U.S. Foods and the Twin City Track Club. Hang in there, neighbors. The finish line on this one may be close.

This Saturday, the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is swinging by Bricks and Mini-Figs in Kernersville to help the store celebrate with its growing community of brick builders. You will find the shop in the Newmarket Plaza Shopping Center at 960 South Main Street.

Owner Lee Cannon opened Bricks and Mini-Figs about a year and a half ago with a mission bigger than just buying, selling and trading sets. The idea was to build a gathering place where kids and adults who love LEGOs can browse, take a class, and connect over the hobby. The team helps collectors and families track down everything from the newest releases to those hard-to-find sets people have wanted for years, and if what you are after is not in stock, they will add it to a wish list and reach out when it arrives.

What Cannon is proudest of, though, are the moments that bring people together, the events and the make-and-takes. Saturday's Spider-Man visit is exactly that kind of moment. Whether you are a longtime builder or just getting into it, stop by, say hi to a superhero, and enjoy an afternoon with fellow fans.

The Old Salem Chapter of the Antique Automobile Club of America hosts its Downtown Kernersville Cruise-In this Saturday, August 1, from 4 to 7 p.m. It's the third of five this year. Along with the classic and antique cars, there's music from DJ Barry Rentz, the "Mobile Jukebox," a 50-50 raffle with door prizes, and baked goods and drinks for sale.

Here's the part to feel good about: all the proceeds from the raffle and sales get donated to local organizations at the end of the year. So you can wander the rows of cars, grab a treat, and know your few dollars are staying right here in town. Can't make Saturday? The club is back downtown on September 12 and October 10.

A little local kindness worth knowing about.

The Shepherd's Center of Kernersville has received a $5,000 grant from the Kernersville Foundation to support The Rest Stop, its group respite ministry for people living with memory loss. The money will help cover operating costs and provide scholarships so families facing financial barriers can still take part.

The Rest Stop launched in March 2026 as a safe, welcoming place where people experiencing memory loss can enjoy activities, music, exercise and fellowship, while their caregivers get a few precious hours to rest, run errands or simply recharge. It runs in partnership with Sedge Garden United Methodist Church and a team of trained volunteers. "Caring for a loved one with memory loss can be both rewarding and challenging," said executive director Asheley Cooper, adding that the grant helps make sure money is not what keeps a family from getting support.
