Two local soccer teams make it to the playoffs

The postseason is coming to the Kernersville area. East Forsyth and Bishop McGuinness have both qualified for the NCHSAA boys' soccer playoffs, the Kernersville News reports, and both teams will open at home.

East Forsyth earned the No. 16 seed in the 7A West bracket and will host No. 17 Southwest Guilford in the first round Monday, Nov. 2. That is about as even a matchup as the bracket allows, so expect a close one. The Eagles head into the playoffs with momentum after blanking Parkland 4-0 on Senior Night earlier this month.

Bishop McGuinness landed the No. 6 seed in the 2A West, which earned the Villains a first-round bye. They will host the winner of Alleghany and Cherryville in the second round Thursday, Nov. 5.

The playoffs move fast from there. The third and fourth rounds follow the same Monday and Thursday schedule the next week, regionals are set for Tuesday, Nov. 17, and the state championships run Nov. 19 to 21. Good luck to both teams, and if you can make it out to cheer them on, a home crowd always helps.

Kevin Bugg named the next executive director of the Kernersville Foundation

A familiar local face will lead the Kernersville Foundation into the new year. The foundation has appointed Kevin Bugg as its next executive director, the Kernersville News reports. He starts Jan. 1, succeeding Bruce Boyer, who has led the foundation for the past three years. Boyer will stay on for several months to help with the transition.

Bugg brings a long career in financial services. He has been with State Farm since graduating from Radford University in 1985 and has run a State Farm office in Kernersville since 1995. Board chair Duane Long called the appointment "a great opportunity for Kernersville," crediting Bugg's 30-plus years of community service and his ability to help people find ways to give that also reduce their tax liability. "He will grow the Kernersville Foundation to the next level," Long said.

Tiny trick-or-treaters: NICU babies at Brenner celebrate their first Halloween

Some of the area's newest residents are only a few days old, and they are already in costume. With help from the medical staff, babies in the neonatal intensive care unit at Atrium Health Levine Children's/Brenner Children's Hospital in Winston-Salem dressed up for their very first Halloween, FOX8 reports. The lineup included pumpkins, firefighters and even Winnie the Pooh characters, and the result was smiles all around the unit.

Many of the babies are in the NICU because of a premature birth, low birth weight or other medical conditions. The staff's little costume party is a sweet reminder that these families get some joy alongside the care, too.
