Three local teams are in the football playoffs
The regular season is over, and the postseason runs right through the Kernersville area. The NCHSAA released its final football playoff brackets Saturday, and East Forsyth, Glenn and Bishop McGuinness all made the field.
East Forsyth earned its spot the hard way. The Eagles went to Pfafftown Friday night and edged Reagan 12-10, handing the Raiders their first conference loss of the season, MaxPreps reports. Jackson Jordan ran for 54 yards and a touchdown, and quarterback Braxton Johnson completed 9 of 13 passes for 110 yards, 54 of them to Rylan Harrison. The win was the Eagles’ fourth straight, lifted them to 7-3 and avenged a 28-14 loss to Reagan last October.
That finish paid off. East Forsyth is the No. 8 seed in the 7A West bracket and has a first-round bye, so the Eagles will host a second-round game on Friday, Nov. 13.
Glenn’s regular season ended with a 35-0 loss at Mount Tabor, but the Bobcats still earned the No. 14 seed in the 6A West and will host No. 19 Eastern Guilford in the first round. Bishop McGuinness, the No. 18 seed in the 2A West, opens on the road at No. 15 Swain County.
And just up the road, Walkertown closed its season with a 33-6 win over Morehead and landed the No. 4 seed in the 3A West, which also comes with a first-round bye.
First-round games are Friday, Nov. 6, with the higher seed hosting each round. Good luck to all of them, and if you can get out to a home game, a loud crowd always helps.

Forsyth Tech wins two national awards for its board and staff
Forsyth Technical Community College has picked up two national honors from the Association of Community College Trustees, the Kernersville News reports. The college won the national Impact and Success Award, which recognizes a board of trustees, or a board and president together, for an exemplary commitment to the success of its students and communities. Forsyth Tech’s win reflects the partnership between its trustees and college leadership.
Sara Singleton, the college’s associate vice president for governance and strategic innovation, won the national Professional Board Staff Member Award. Forsyth Tech had already taken the Southern Region honors in both categories in August, putting it up against four other regional winners for each national award. Both were announced at the ACCT Leadership Congress in Chicago.

Oh, deer: a buck crashes through a Winston-Salem laundromat
Laundry day got a lot more exciting this week on South Main Street in Winston-Salem. On Tuesday, a deer knocked down a woman in a laundromat’s parking lot, then broke through the front window and ran through the building while six people were inside, the Winston-Salem Journal reports.
It is a good reminder that deer are on the move right now. Fall is mating season, and deer are most active around dawn and dusk. With the clocks falling back this weekend, more of the evening drive home now happens in the dark. Slow down on wooded roads, use your high beams when you can, and if a deer steps out in front of you, brake firmly instead of swerving. Where you see one, expect another close behind.

Your Sunday in Kernersville: an extra hour, a cloudy 65 and Election Day on Tuesday
Good morning, and enjoy that extra hour! Here’s what to know today.
The clocks fell back. Daylight saving time ended at 2 a.m. If the clock on the microwave or in the car didn’t change on its own, set it back an hour. Sunset now comes around 5:20 p.m., so the evening drive home will be darker starting this week.
Gray but mild. Today stays mostly cloudy with a high near 65 and a light northeast breeze, dipping to around 48 tonight. Monday brings a little more sun and a high near 67.
Election Day is Tuesday. Early voting wrapped up Saturday, so from here on you’ll vote at your assigned polling place, open 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 3. Not sure where yours is? Check with the Forsyth County Board of Elections.
Playoff soccer Monday. East Forsyth’s boys open the NCHSAA soccer playoffs at home Monday against Southwest Guilford. Bishop McGuinness has a first-round bye and plays again Thursday.
Rams homecoming. Winston-Salem State kicks off its Forever Red Homecoming today with a parade at 2 p.m. starting at Research Parkway and Fifth Street. The celebration runs all week and wraps up with the homecoming game against Fayetteville State on Saturday, Nov. 7, at 1:30 p.m. Read more.
