Sedge Garden Elementary Gets New Principal After Pre-K Abuse Investigation
Sedge Garden Elementary School in Kernersville has a new principal. Christy Slate — currently serving as director of school improvement for the east area of WS/FCS — has been named to lead the school following the suspension of former principal Angela Reeves.
The change comes after a troubling investigation at the school's pre-K program. A teacher's assistant was accused of forcefully restraining children, lifting a child by the arm, kicking a child, and covering a child's head with a blanket during nap time. The NC Division of Child Development and Early Education investigated the school from December 2025 through March 2026.
According to NCDCDEE findings, Reeves was aware of the behavior and failed to report it or take steps to ensure children's safety. She was suspended with pay in March 2026. A teacher at the school was also suspended pending investigation.
Slate has a proven track record in WS/FCS, having turned around two previously low-performing elementary schools.
Kernersville Middle School Names Rachel Sanchez as Its Next Principal
Kernersville Middle School has a new principal for 2026-27. Rachel Sanchez, who has served as assistant principal at KMS since 2015, was named to the top job as part of WS/FCS's appointment of eight new principals for the coming school year.
Sanchez came through the district's Leader Equity Advancement Pipeline — known as LEAP — a program that trains current district employees for school leadership roles. Seven of the eight new principals announced this week came through LEAP. Before joining KMS, she spent a decade teaching in Guilford County Schools. Most newly appointed principals began their new roles June 1.
Forsyth County Officially Adopts $591M FY27 Budget — Property Tax Rate Drops
Forsyth County commissioners adopted the FY 2026-27 budget on June 5. The $591 million spending plan sets the property tax rate at 53.52 cents per $100 of assessed value — a drop of 14.26 cents from last year, driven by the county's recent property reappraisal that found values increased an average of 51%.
Homeowners whose property values rose significantly may still see higher tax bills even at the lower rate. The budget grew 0.9% over the current fiscal year and includes $2 million in new spending: nine new county positions, two new fire department positions, and a vehicle for the Sheriff's Office.
Code Orange Air Quality Alert Through Saturday — Limit Outdoor Time During Peak Hours
If you're heading to one of Saturday's many outdoor events, take note. The Triad is under a Code Orange air quality alert through Saturday as ozone levels are expected to reach concentrations that are unhealthy for sensitive groups.
Children, the elderly, and anyone with asthma or respiratory conditions are most at risk. Health officials recommend limiting strenuous outdoor activity — especially between noon and 6 p.m. when ozone peaks. Go early, stay hydrated, and step inside if you notice throat irritation or shortness of breath.
