One traffic stop, a high-speed chase, and a life turned upside down in Kernersville

A routine traffic stop in Kernersville turned into a police chase that ended with a driver in custody and a significant haul of drugs and cash. The incident happened on May 25.

An officer from the Kernersville Police Department tried to pull over a vehicle, but the driver didn't stop. Instead, he led officers on a pursuit before finally pulling over and being taken into custody.

Police identified the driver as Jackie Dontrel Jaquay Watson. During a search of the vehicle, officers found Xanax pills, heroin, marijuana, cocaine, and more than $5,000 in cash.

They also seized the car under North Carolina's "run and done" law, which allows authorities to take vehicles used in fleeing from police. Watson now faces a long list of charges.

These include trafficking in fentanyl, heroin, and opioids. He's also charged with possession with intent to manufacture, sell, and deliver controlled substances, simple possession, possession of a firearm by a felon, and felony eluding arrest.1

Town officials pointed to Duke's $5 billion net income as evidence the company doesn't need the hike, which they say would hit households hardest. The resolution will be submitted to state regulators ahead of a public hearing in June.3
