Neese’s Country Sausage gets a new owner and a promised comeback

Neese’s Country Sausage, the Greensboro-made breakfast staple that has been missing from store shelves for months, is coming back. Jesse Jones, a Raleigh company known for its bright red Martinsville Speedway Hot Dogs, has bought the Neese’s brand and says it will restore production.

“After months of limited availability, Neese’s Country Sausage is pleased to announce that its beloved products will soon return to store shelves and restaurant kitchens across the region,” the company said, thanking loyal customers for their support. Karl White, president of Jesse Jones, said the company will stay true to the original recipes while setting the brand up for long-term success.

Neese’s products became hard to find after the U.S. Department of Agriculture suspended production in September over requirements for controlling listeria in ready-to-eat foods, which led to a full shutdown. Jesse Jones, owned by food distributor White Packing Company, now plans to get the sausage, livermush and other Neese’s favorites back where Triad families expect them.

Boys & Girls Clubs of the Greater Triad earns a state nod for tutoring that works

The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Greater Triad has been recognized by the N.C. Department of Public Instruction for new tutoring programs that are helping kids hit academic benchmarks. Across the state, fewer than half of third-graders read on grade level, a gap that puts students at higher risk of falling behind.

In the first year of the clubs’ tutoring programs, 17% of students who were below grade level in reading and 9% of those below in math reached grade level, with some posting more than 50% growth in reading. “Meaningful results don’t happen by accident,” said Heather Brock, vice president of programs and impact. “They are built through strong relationships, consistent implementation, and a commitment to continuous improvement.”

The recognition comes as the organization rolls out its Future Ready Triad initiative, the largest active expansion in the national Boys & Girls Clubs network, growing from six club sites to more than two dozen across five counties by 2030, starting in Greensboro and Winston-Salem. The goal is to reach more than 9,000 young people a year.

When George Washington came through, he ate breakfast in what is now Kernersville

Here is a piece of local history worth a second look as the country marks its 250th anniversary. In the spring of 1791, President George Washington swung through the Triad on a tour of the South, and one of his stops was breakfast at a tavern in Dobson’s Crossroads, the community we now call Kernersville.

According to author Warren L. Bingham, who spoke at Old Salem last month about his book on the trip, Washington arrived in Salem on May 31 to the sound of Moravian musicians and stayed two days at the Salem Tavern. He extended his visit to meet North Carolina Gov. Alexander Martin, who assured the president the state would soon ratify the Bill of Rights.

On June 2, Washington and the governor left Salem at 4 a.m. and stopped for breakfast at Dobson’s before continuing on to the Guilford Courthouse battlefield, a turning point of the Revolution. Washington’s southern tour covered about 1,900 miles, 30 to 50 miles a day, in a carriage pulled by four brown horses.

Huntington Bank opens its first Kernersville branch on East Mountain Street

Huntington National Bank has opened its first branch in Kernersville, at 250 E. Mountain St., the former home of Mrs. Winner’s Chicken & Biscuits. The branch offers a full range of services, plus drive-thru teller lanes and a drive-up ATM.

The Kernersville location is Huntington’s fourth full-service branch in the Triad and its 10th in the Carolinas, part of an expansion that began in 2025 and could eventually reach about 55 branches across the region. “Kernersville is an important part of that investment,” said Chris Bryan, the bank’s Triad market president.

Huntington’s other Triad branches are in Winston-Salem and Greensboro, all opened this year. “We are excited to open this branch and look forward to supporting the continued success of the Kernersville community and the Triad,” Bryan said.
