Musical Chairs, Forsyth Students, School Edition: 2,500 students are getting new schools next year

Around 2,500 Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools students will have a new residential school assignment when the district's redrawn attendance boundaries take effect for the 2027-28 school year, FOX8 reports.

The changes come out of the district's Residential Boundary Planning Project, a districtwide review of school zones. WS/FCS says the goals are to assign students to schools closer to home, make bus routes more efficient and less costly, and create more socioeconomically diverse schools. The district has begun planning how to roll out the new map.

Before anyone starts cleaning out a locker, here's the catch: a new assignment doesn't mean a student has to move. Families who want their child to stay put can apply through the district's stability process. The application opens Saturday, Oct. 31, and stays open until Jan. 29, 2027. Families who choose to stay will need to provide their own transportation, and the district says it won't know how many students will actually switch schools until families make their decisions.

Not sure whether your address is affected? Affected families were to get individual notices from the district this fall, and WS/FCS has more details on its boundary project page.

Don't take a ballot selfie. It's against the law.

Heading to the polls this weekend or on Election Day? Keep the phone in your pocket once you're in the booth. Taking a picture of your filled-out ballot isn't just frowned upon by election officials in North Carolina. It's against the law, the Kernersville News reports.

North Carolina is one of a number of states with a "ballot selfie" ban, Wake Forest University political science professor John Dinan told the paper. The point is to protect the secret ballot. A photo of a completed ballot is exactly what someone paying or pressuring a voter would need to confirm the vote was cast their way, so the law takes that option off the table.

Not everyone is a fan. Critics argue the ban infringes on free speech, and a challenge brought by a voter who posted a picture of her ballot online is now before the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. So far, a federal judge has sided with the state, and Dinan says the law has withstood legal scrutiny.

Early voting wraps up Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Kernersville Recreation and Event Center and Paddison Memorial Branch Library, and Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3. Snap a picture of your "I Voted" sticker instead.

Adecco says the jobs come with multiple shift options, guaranteed hours, available overtime and opportunities for advancement, and applicants of all experience levels are encouraged to apply.

The company held a three-day hiring event in Greensboro earlier this week, but you can still apply online. For more information, call the local Adecco team at 336-854-6000.
