Music at Twilight brings Xcentrix to the Ciener Botanical Garden on Thursday
Downtown Kernersville's free evening concert series is back this week, with Xcentrix taking the stage at the Paul J. Ciener Botanical Garden on Thursday, Sept. 24, from 6 to 8 p.m.
Music at Twilight, put on by the Kernersville Chamber of Commerce, is free for everyone. The Chamber's advice is simple: "Bring your lawn chairs and plan on a fun, relaxed evening." Sammy's Sliders and Social Habit will be on site selling food and drinks, so there's no need to eat before you go.
Truliant Federal Credit Union is handing out free fans to the first 200 people through the gate. Brightspeed and Caudill's are sponsoring the band, with TexTech Coatings and The Shepherd's Center of Kernersville signed on as friends of the series.
One thing to watch: the forecast calls for rain through early Thursday afternoon before things dry out. Anyone planning to go can check the Chamber's event page or call Chris Comer at the Chamber, (336) 993-4521, for updates. The garden is at 215 S. Main St.
Fire destroys empty two-story house on Glenn Street
Kernersville Fire Rescue battled a heavy fire at a two-story home in the 700 block of Glenn Street on Monday night. The call came in at about 8:04 p.m., and crews arrived to find fire on the first and second floors at the back of the house.
Firefighters started to work the fire from inside but switched to fighting it from the outside over concerns about the home's structure. The house was empty at the time, and no firefighters or residents were hurt. Beeson's Crossroads Fire Department and the Winston-Salem Fire Department helped, with Forsyth County EMS on standby.
The Kernersville Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause.
Forsyth District Judge Carrie Vickery named to Superior Court
Gov. Josh Stein has appointed Forsyth County District Court Judge Carrie Vickery to a Superior Court seat in Forsyth County. She fills the vacancy left when Judge David Hall retired.
Vickery, 39, was first elected to the District Court bench in 2016 and was reelected in 2020 and 2024. She also teaches as an adjunct professor at Wake Forest University School of Law. Before becoming a judge, she practiced at the Holton Law Firm in Winston-Salem. She earned her bachelor's degree at Western Carolina University and her law degree at Elon University School of Law.
Forsyth County Career Expo offers walk-in job interviews Thursday
Anyone looking for a steady job close to home can meet with 13 Forsyth County departments in one place on Thursday, Sept. 24, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Forsyth County Government Center, 201 N. Chestnut St. in Winston-Salem.
Departments on hand include Emergency Services, Parks and Recreation, Public Health, Social Services, the Airport, Tax Administration and more. Some will hold on-site interviews. There will also be an application lab for help filling out applications, along with resume reviews and career information sessions. Walk-ins are welcome.
