Local Tennis Standout Three-Peats State Title
Bishop McGuinness has a three-time state champion. Lucia Neves won her third straight NCHSAA girls' tennis individual state championship on Saturday at Cary Tennis Park, beating Triangle Math and Science's Sasha Korjova 6-2, 6-1 in the 2A final, the Kernersville News reports.
Neves was in control all weekend. She cruised past Research Triangle's Savannah Shih 6-1, 6-0 and Manteo's Emma Horne 6-0, 6-0 to reach the final, dropping just one game on the way.
The title adds to a remarkable run. Neves won the 1A state championship in 2024 and the 2A crown last year, and now she has made it three in a row. Bishop also sent the doubles team of MK Suire and Nan Laney to the 2A doubles tournament, where they reached the quarterfinals.
It caps a big fall for Bishop tennis, which christened six new lighted courts on campus earlier this month. Congratulations to Lucia and the whole Villains program.

Kernersville police ask for help finding a hit-and-run tractor-trailer driver
The Kernersville Police Department is asking the public to help identify a tractor-trailer driver who kept going after hitting a car on Salem Parkway two weeks ago.
Police say a white tractor-trailer coming off Interstate 74 onto eastbound Salem Parkway near Exit 225 struck a passenger vehicle around 5:20 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 12. The crash badly damaged the car and injured its driver. A dash camera caught the truck drifting into the car's lane just before impact, but investigators still haven't been able to identify the truck or the person behind the wheel.
If you saw the wreck or know anything that could help identify the truck or its driver, call Officer Benjamin Wall at (336) 996-3177.

North Carolina joins lawsuit over Dollar General's shelf and register prices
North Carolina is one of 20 states that have joined the Federal Trade Commission in suing Dollar General over what regulators call "long-running deceptive pricing practices," the Winston-Salem Journal reports.
The complaint, filed in federal court in Tennessee, accuses the chain of routinely charging shoppers more at the register than the prices shown on shelves, tags and ads, and of failing to fix the problem despite knowing about it for years. Dollar General, which runs more than 21,000 stores and has several around Kernersville, says it aims for 100% price accuracy, that occasional mistakes happen at any retailer and that it will "defend this litigation vigorously."
Whatever happens in court, it's a good reminder for any store: glance at your receipt before you leave, and ask a cashier to make it right if a price rings up higher than the tag.

Your Tuesday in Kernersville: sunshine, record early voting and snow trucks on a practice run
Here's what to know for the middle of Halloween week.
Sunny and 73. Expect sunshine all day with a high near 73 and a light breeze. Tonight dips to around 48, and Wednesday stays mostly sunny with a high near 69.
Early voting is booming. Forsyth County voters cast 59,539 early ballots through Sunday, well ahead of the 40,483 cast at the same point in 2022, according to the Winston-Salem Journal. Both Kernersville sites, the Recreation and Event Center on Shields Road and Paddison Memorial Branch Library on Harmon Lane, are open 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on weekdays. Early voting ends Saturday, Oct. 31, at 3 p.m., and Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3. Read the turnout story.
Snow trucks on a practice run. It's 73 degrees, but NCDOT is already thinking about winter. Crews drove their Forsyth County snow routes Monday to test plows and spreaders, and they'll start the season with about 73 pieces of equipment, more than 3,000 tons of salt and 105,000 gallons of brine, FOX8 reports. Read more.
Fall back Sunday. Daylight saving time ends Sunday, Nov. 1, so set your clocks back an hour Saturday night, right after you finish trick-or-treating. See the events calendar above for this weekend's Halloween fun.
