Your Backyard Renovation List Is Missing Something

Every backyard renovation has a list. New deck. Better lighting. Maybe that outdoor kitchen you've been pinning for years.
Here's what usually gets left off: shelter. Without it, your brand-new patio is only as good as the weather forecast. A Hansø pergola fixes that.
Built from T6 aerospace-grade aluminum and engineered for up to 167 mph winds and up to 65 PSF snow load, it keeps your patio covered, comfortable, and in use from spring through winter. Motorized louvers let you decide how much sky you want, anytime.
Early Bird Offers EXTENDED: save up to 40% on pergolas, plus a $1,000 installation voucher, a Free Hansø ProCheck Care™ 10-Year Plan worth $950, FREE heater and more.
The list is long. Make sure the most important thing is on it.

Kernersville salutes its veterans with a parade Sunday and a celebration Nov. 11
Kernersville has two good chances in the coming week to thank the people who served. The Kernersville Veterans Parade comes through downtown on Sunday, Nov. 8, and three days later, on Veterans Day itself, Veterans Bridge Home hosts its annual celebration at the Carolina Field of Honor.
The parade. The Kernersville Chamber of Commerce holds the parade every year on the Sunday before Veterans Day. It steps off at 2:30 p.m., and participants gather at the Farmers Market by 2 p.m., when the roads close. The route runs up South Main Street to North Main Street, then along Railroad Street to Beard Street and across East Mountain Street back to the Farmers Market, where a Hero's Welcome follows right after the parade. Veterans who want to take part can sign up through the Chamber at no charge.
The celebration. On Wednesday, Nov. 11, Veterans Bridge Home, a nonprofit that connects veterans and their families with support across the Carolinas, teams up with the War Memorial Foundation for a free, family-friendly morning at the Carolina Field of Honor, 9652 W. Market St., the Kernersville News reports. Gates open at 10:30 a.m., with time to visit before an 11 a.m. ceremony featuring keynote speaker retired Brig. Gen. Norm Cooling. The event wraps up at noon.
Expect coffee and donuts, kids' activities and live music, including Serah Haley singing the Armed Forces Medley, a highlight of last year's crowded celebration. Local sports teams will be on hand too, including the Carolina Core, the Winston-Salem Dash and the High Point Rockers.
If there's a veteran in your life, this is a great week to bring them along, or simply to say thank you.

Forsyth deputies make 11 arrests in an October domestic violence crackdown
A month-long push by the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office led to 11 arrests and 26 charges, ABC45 reports. Working with the Forsyth County District Attorney's Office, investigators spent October, which is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, tracking down people wanted on domestic violence-related charges.
The sheriff's office said the goal was to hold offenders accountable while protecting victims, and it asked residents to keep prevention and intervention in mind all year, not just in October. Sheriff Bobby F. Kimbrough Jr. said his office will keep working with community partners to protect victims and pursue those responsible for abuse.
If you or someone you know needs help, call 911 in an emergency, the sheriff's office at 336-727-2112, or the Bridges to Hope Family Justice Center at 336-776-3255 for resources and support. The National Domestic Violence Hotline is also available any time at 1-800-799-7233.

After Tuesday's vote, Democrats will lead the Forsyth commission and the N.C. House
Wednesday's issue had the overnight numbers. With every precinct counted, here's what Tuesday's results change for Kernersville, based on complete but unofficial returns. Nothing is official until the canvass later this month.
County commission. Democrat Marsie West's win over Republican Chris Parker in District B, which covers Kernersville, gives Democrats a 4-3 majority on the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners, WFDD reports, since incumbents Dan Besse, Shai Woodbury and Tonya McDaniel all kept their seats. Parker had been appointed to the seat in August after longtime Commissioner Don Martin retired, and Republicans had held the board majority for years.
N.C. House. Democrats flipped control of the state House after 16 years of Republican control, the Kernersville News reports. Unofficial returns point to 70 Democrats, 49 Republicans and one unaffiliated member when the new session starts in 2027, though a handful of races are close enough for a possible recount. Locally, first-time candidate Jen Wiles beat Rep. Donny Lambeth 54% to 46% in House District 75, which covers most of the Kernersville area. Lambeth, first elected in 2012, chaired House appropriations and health committees.
N.C. Senate. Republicans appear to have kept their Senate majority, 26 to 24, but lost their supermajority. Republican Dana Caudill Jones held the 31st District seat.
District attorney. Democrat Amara M. Hunter defeated Republican Jim O'Neill, Forsyth's DA since 2009, 54.4% to 45.6%. O'Neill thanked his supporters and promised a smooth transition, FOX8 reports. Sheriff Bobby Kimbrough won reelection with about 78% of the vote.

Your Thursday in Kernersville: showers, a high near 72 and a busy weekend ahead
Good morning. Here's what to know today.
Keep the umbrella close. After overnight rain, expect a mostly cloudy Thursday with a 40% chance of more showers and a high near 72, according to the National Weather Service. Another round of showers, maybe with a thunderstorm, moves through late tonight. Friday clears out in the afternoon, and Saturday turns sunny and cooler, with a high near 63.
Business Connects today. The Chamber's Kernersville Business Connects meets from 4 to 5 p.m.
Opioid settlement input session tonight. Forsyth County holds an input session with its municipalities on the North Carolina opioid settlement at 6 p.m. in the Health and Human Services Annex 1 Auditorium, 725 Highland Ave., Winston-Salem.
The 421 South lane closure starts Friday. From Nov. 6 through Nov. 16, one lane of U.S. 421 South in Forsyth County will be closed for merge-lane work, along with one lane of the I-74 ramp to U.S. 421 South. To skip the backup, NCDOT suggests taking I-74 South to I-40 East.
Plan your weekend. The 43rd Annual Cozy Cottage Craft Show fills the Kernersville Community House on Friday and Saturday, Glenn hosts Eastern Guilford in the football playoffs Friday night, the Wreath-Laying Ceremony at Historic St. Paul's AME Cemetery is Saturday morning, and the Veterans Parade steps off downtown at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
