New stretch of the Winston-Salem Northern Beltway opens Saturday, two months early
Drivers heading around Winston-Salem have a new, faster route as of this weekend. The final sections of the Winston-Salem Northern Beltway, connecting U.S. 421, Interstate 40 and the existing Interstate 74, are set to open to traffic early Saturday morning, Sept. 19, two months ahead of schedule.
The opening caps years of construction on the beltway's northern and western legs, giving Kernersville-area drivers another way to skip downtown Winston-Salem traffic on trips across town or toward the airport.
Kernersville Foundation receives $425,000 in state grant funding
The Kernersville Foundation has been awarded a $425,000 grant in this year's state budget, thanks to two local legislators.
State Sen. Dana Caudill Jones and state Rep. Donny Lambeth, both Forsyth County Republicans, directed the funding to the foundation to help it support local nonprofits providing needed services in the community. Foundation board chair Duane Long and vice chair Kevin Bugg accepted the grant on the organization's behalf.
Kernersville Little Theatre opens its run of "The Great Gatsby"
Kernersville Little Theatre opened its production of Simon Levy's stage adaptation of "The Great Gatsby" Thursday night, with the show continuing into this weekend and next.
Performances run in the James Fitzpatrick Auditorium at Kernersville Elementary School, 512 W. Mountain St., with evening shows Saturday, Sept. 19, and Sept. 25 and 26 at 7:30 p.m., plus matinees Sept. 20 and 27 at 2 p.m.
Planning board OKs zoning for 670-unit apartment complex on N.C. 66
Kernersville's Planning Board unanimously approved a rezoning request this week that clears the way for up to 670 multifamily residential units on N.C. 66 South, on tracts bounded by Heartland Drive, Kernersville Medical Parkway and Interstate 40.
The vote comes less than two weeks after the board signed off on a separate apartment rezoning elsewhere in town, part of a broader wave of multifamily development moving through Kernersville's approval process this fall.
