Kernersville Friday Night Lights

It was a split Friday night for Kernersville football. East Forsyth rolled past Reynolds 47-12, while Glenn was shut out by Oak Grove 32-0, according to the Winston-Salem Journal's Week 10 scoreboard.

The Eagles are on a tear. Friday's win came a week after a 55-12 rout at Northwest Guilford, lifting East Forsyth to 6-3. The Central Piedmont 8A/7A race got more interesting, too, as Reagan edged West Forsyth 35-34 in double overtime in the conference's biggest game of the night.

Glenn couldn't carry the momentum from last week's 49-0 win at North Forsyth. The Bobcats were held scoreless against Oak Grove and fall to 6-3.

Bishop McGuinness hosted The College Prep and Leadership Academy (TCPLA), but the final had not been reported as of Saturday evening. The Villains came into the night at 3-6.

Two Kernersville players also earned a big honor this week. East Forsyth offensive lineman Cason Holder and Glenn's Joshua Wallace were named to the West team for the 2026 East-West All-Star Game, set for Saturday, Dec. 19, at 1 p.m. at Jamieson Stadium in Greensboro. Holder has helped the Eagles pile up more than 2,600 yards of offense this season, and Wallace has been a two-way threat for the Bobcats with four touchdowns and four interceptions, the Journal reports.

YMCA Bright Beginnings outfits a record 168 Kernersville kids for school

The Kernersville Family YMCA's 27th annual Bright Beginnings event served 168 local students this year, the most children the program has ever helped, the Kernersville News reports.

Bright Beginnings pairs each child with a volunteer for a personal shopping trip. Every student goes home with new school clothes, new athletic shoes and a backpack filled with grade-appropriate supplies. More than 200 volunteers, board members, staff and community partners pitched in to make it happen.

“Bright Beginnings is one of my favorite Y programs because it so clearly reflects our mission,” said Adam Cardwell, the Kernersville Family YMCA's executive director. Across Northwest North Carolina, one in four children lives in poverty and more than half of students qualify for free or reduced lunch, so a new school year can put real strain on family budgets.

It took a village. Brightspeed was the presenting sponsor, Fleet Feet Winston-Salem fitted every child for new shoes, The Way Fellowship served food, and the Kiwanis Club of Kernersville gave every child a new book. Kernersville police and fire (with Sparky the Fire Dog), High Point University, Novant Health, Savage Roasters Coffee and Phocused by Darryl also lent a hand. Taylor Mabe and Whitney Hunter co-chaired this year's event.

East Forsyth's football family rallies around Coach Kelly Hayes

Kelly Hayes, East Forsyth's defensive line coach for the last three seasons, was diagnosed with colon cancer in September, the Winston-Salem Journal reports. He had surgery, and because the cancer reached his lymph nodes, he was set to begin chemotherapy every two weeks for about six months.

Hayes is a volunteer coach, and head coach Todd Willert says he shows up every single day. “The kids just love him,” Willert told the Journal. Willert first met Hayes when he was coaching Pop Warner and says he quickly learned Hayes is one of a kind.

Hayes is staying upbeat. “This is just a bump in the road, and we are all staying positive,” he wrote on Facebook, thanking everyone for their prayers and support.

Want to help? The East Forsyth Touchdown Club is selling blue ribbon pins for $5, has set up a meal train for the Hayes family and is accepting donations through Venmo (@EFHS-TDCLUB) and Cash App ($EFHSTDCLUB).
