Isaias's leftovers bring Sunday storms and a small tornado risk to Kernersville

What's left of Hurricane Isaias is spreading rain across the Piedmont this weekend. The storm came ashore in Florida on Friday night as a major hurricane and is weakening as it moves north toward Tennessee, but its rain bands are still reaching the Triad.

The heaviest rain in Kernersville is expected overnight, when the National Weather Service says three-quarters of an inch to an inch could fall, along with a few thunderstorms. Sunday brings more showers and storms, with another half to three-quarters of an inch possible, a high near 74 and gusts up to 24 mph. WXII meteorologists expect Piedmont totals of a half inch to an inch and a half, though tropical rain bands can leave one neighborhood soaked while the next one over stays fairly dry.

The bigger thing to watch is Sunday afternoon. Once the main rain shield passes, leftover tropical moisture could fuel scattered storms, and a few could turn severe. WXII says there is a low, but not zero, chance of brief spin-up tornadoes, which can form quickly in storms with tropical roots. Gusts near 30 mph could also knock down small or loose limbs, though widespread power outages are not expected.

The worst of Isaias is aimed at the mountains, where 2 to 8 inches of rain is possible. National Weather Service meteorologist Mike Strickler told the Kernersville News that the storm is not expected to rival Helene, and AccuWeather notes Isaias is moving faster than Helene did in 2024, which should limit flooding. "There's still some uncertainty with the timing and amounts," Strickler said.

A few simple steps for Sunday: keep weather alerts turned on on your phone, especially in the afternoon; never drive through water covering the road; and bring in or tie down anything light in the yard. The good news comes Monday, when the forecast calls for sunshine and a high near 77.

Friday night football: East Forsyth rolls, Bishop wins and Glenn falls to North Davidson

East Forsyth 50, Parkland 0. The Eagles bounced back from last week's loss to West Forsyth with a lopsided road shutout, evening their conference record and improving to 4-3. East Forsyth travels to Northwest Guilford on Friday.

Bishop McGuinness 41, North Stokes 18. The Villains got back in the win column at home a week after a loss to South Stokes. Bishop is now 3-5 and visits Chatham Central on Friday.

North Davidson 30, Glenn 21. The Bobcats came up short at home in a Piedmont-Triad 6A/5A showdown, as North Davidson's Zach Ross and C.J. Morgan led the Knights, according to the Winston-Salem Journal. Glenn drops to 5-2 and plays at North Forsyth on Friday.

A new age-progression image renews the search for a Kernersville man missing 10 years

The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children has released a new image of James "Martin" Roberts, a Kernersville man who disappeared nearly 10 years ago while he was a college student in Boone. A forensic artist created the age progression to show what Roberts might look like today, at 30.

Roberts was last seen April 21, 2016. He was attending a campus of Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute and told his roommates he was heading to the Appalachian State University library to study. Along the way he ran into his cousin, and the two walked to a bus stop on Rivers Street outside the Holmes Convocation Center. His cousin boarded the bus. Surveillance video from the bus shows Roberts walking away, and it is the last known sighting of him.

Roberts is 5 feet 10 inches tall with brown hair and blue eyes. He was last seen wearing a black short-sleeve Appalachian State windbreaker, khaki shorts and gray New Balance sneakers. He has two distinctive tattoos: three mountains in red, blue and black on his left forearm, and Bob Marley lyrics on the right side of his rib cage.

NCMEC says a fresh image can reach people who never heard about the case or have forgotten it. "Maybe Martin himself is out there and sees that people are still looking for him," said Angeline Hartmann, the center's communications director. Anyone with information is asked to call NCMEC at 1-800-THE-LOST (1-800-843-5678) or the Boone Police Department at 828-268-6900.
