Hundreds brave the heat at the Rotary Club of Kernersville 5K
A big field of runners shook off the holiday heat for the annual Rotary Club of Kernersville 4th of July 5K on Saturday morning. A total of 418 runners took part, coming from around town, across North Carolina and out of state, including one determined competitor who ran the whole thing on a single crutch after a recent injury. As tradition goes, the race kicks off the Fourth in Kernersville, with the parade stepping off as soon as the last runner crosses the finish line.
Up front, Graham Crawford of Charlottesville, Virginia, won the men's division in 14:47, followed by Ricky Flynn of Greenville, S.C. (15:05), Mason Rudel of Pfafftown (15:50), Adam Jones of Winston-Salem (15:59) and Steven Anderson of Stokesdale (16:16). Paige Hofstad of Raleigh took the women's title in 16:52, ahead of Kennedy Weisner of Charlottesville (19:03), Shelby Gurley of Marion (19:45), Emily Boles of Raleigh (20:08) and Ericka Charles of Durham (20:57). Fast times, a full field and a hometown tradition kept intact.

Group seeks seniors to be kids' 'reading buddies'
A local nonprofit is looking for older neighbors who want to help kids learn to read. Giving 365 Inc. has been awarded a federal AmeriCorps Seniors RSVP grant to launch a program pairing volunteers with young students as reading buddies, helping children in kindergarten through third grade build their reading and comprehension skills.
The $98,421 Village of Wisdom Initiative grant will let Giving 365 recruit, train and support about 100 senior volunteers across Alamance, Guilford, Forsyth and Richmond counties. Adults 55 and older who want to volunteer, along with nonprofits and public organizations interested in hosting volunteers, can reach Patricia Gilliam at 336-269-2762 or [email protected]. It is a simple, meaningful way to spend a few hours a week and make a lasting difference for a child.

Vietnam POW throws out the first pitch at a Triad ballgame
There was a special guest on the mound for the Fourth of July in the Triad. Retired Air Force Col. Norm McDaniel, a Vietnam prisoner of war, threw out the ceremonial first pitch on Saturday as the Burlington Sock Puppets hosted the Danville Otterbots. It was a fitting Independence Day tribute to a veteran who spent years as a POW and came home to tell the story.
McDaniel is now working with a filmmaker on a movie about his life and his time in captivity. For a holiday weekend, it was a nice reminder of the service behind the celebration.

A simple midyear reset for the second half of the year
We are officially halfway through the year, which makes early July a natural moment to pause and take stock. Those January intentions can feel like a lifetime ago, and that is fine. A midyear reset is not about guilt over what slipped, it is about a gentle course correction while there is still plenty of runway left.
Start by looking back before you look ahead. Give yourself credit for the wins, even the small ones, then honestly reassess the goals that no longer fit and let some of them go without a second thought. For the ones you want to keep, break them into bite-size steps across the months ahead so you always know the next small move. It also helps to name your single biggest energy drain, the commitment or habit that leaves you depleted, and make one change to ease it.
Above all, stay flexible. Life shifts, plans change, and a good reset leaves room for that. A few honest minutes with a cup of coffee this week can set a calmer, clearer tone for the rest of the year.
