New I-40/I-74 interchange opens in Kernersville, a month and a half early
A new stretch of I-74 through Kernersville opened to traffic Saturday, capping the final piece of the Eastern Beltway two years in the making. The five-mile section connects U.S. 421 to I-40, giving drivers a way around an interchange that has long strained under traffic from Greensboro, Winston-Salem and beyond.
Crews moved 3.2 million cubic yards of dirt and used 12 million pounds of steel to build the new overpasses, carving the I-74 corridor out from underneath I-40. NC DOT contracted the section for $261 million, the largest project the division has handled.
"We were supposed to have the road open by November of 2026, but we're actually going to open it a month and a half early," said Larry Shaver, NC DOT resident engineer. "This section that included the I-40 interchange was contracted out for $261 million. That's the biggest money-wise project that our division here with NCDOT has seen in history."
The new route gives drivers heading west on I-40 from Greensboro a way to bypass downtown Winston-Salem and U.S. 52 altogether, continuing on I-74 toward High Point or up toward Mount Airy.
Piney Grove Elementary's fifth annual Fall Festival returns Sept. 26
Piney Grove Elementary will host its fifth annual Fall Festival on Saturday, Sept. 26, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., with a pumpkin patch, hay rides, gem mining and games for the whole family.
This year's festival also features an aerial-silks performance from a Kernersville Middle School student. Families are asked to bring gently used shoes to support the school's fifth-grade shoe drive, which helps fund an overnight field trip.
Kernersville's Oktoberfest returns to Körner's Folly on Oct. 3
The 16th annual Kernersville Oktoberfest returns to Körner's Folly on Saturday, Oct. 3, with German food, drinks and live music from the Piedmont Wind Symphony and the PPS German Band. Self-guided tours of the historic house begin at 1:30 p.m., with the main festival running from 3 to 6 p.m. for guests 21 and up.
Proceeds support the preservation of the 1880 house museum, one of Kernersville's best known landmarks.
East Forsyth blows a 29-14 lead, falls to Mooresville 33-29
East Forsyth built a 29-14 lead in the third quarter on the road Friday night before Mooresville answered with 19 unanswered points, escaping with a 33-29 win over the Eagles.
