Forsyth County shows its heart by giving big

Forsyth County neighbors dug deep for people trying to escape domestic violence. Family Services of Forsyth County's "One Step Closer" capital campaign raised $11.7 million, about $900,000 more than its $10.8 million goal, WXII reports. The money will build a new emergency shelter in Winston-Salem.

The current shelter has room for 36 people, and the new one could double that. Plans call for a 20,732-square-foot building with more private, trauma-informed spaces for survivors and their children. It will also include three longer-term transitional apartments and temporary space for survivors' pets, so no one has to leave a beloved animal behind.

The need is real. Family Services says local law enforcement in Forsyth County responds to about 8,000 domestic violence calls every year, and calls to the agency's emergency domestic violence and sexual assault crisis line have jumped 90%.

If you or someone you know needs help, Family Services' 24-hour crisis line is 336-723-8125.

Crime crackdown in Piedmont sends a message

A regional crackdown called Operation Piedmont Pipeline has ended with 104 arrests and 163 firearms seized, the Kernersville News reports. Local, state and federal officers worked together on the operation, which dates back to the summer.

Allicia Jones, special agent in charge for the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, shared the results at Greensboro Police Department headquarters. Officers carried out 229 operations, including arrests and searches, and followed up on 222 tips from the public. They also seized 37 kilograms, or more than 80 pounds, of illegal drugs, including methamphetamine, cocaine and fentanyl.
