First Baptist Kernersville holds a drive-up food drive for Crisis Control Ministry on Saturday
Helping stock the shelves for neighbors in need will be about as easy as it gets this Saturday. First Baptist Church of Kernersville is hosting a drive-up food drive for Crisis Control Ministry on Saturday, Sept. 26, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Just pull up to the front of the church at 401 Oakhurst St. Volunteers will be waiting to take your donations and unload them from your car, so there's no need to get out. All nonperishable food items will be accepted.
Crisis Control Ministry keeps a list of its most-needed items on its website at crisiscontrol.org, which is a handy guide for anyone making a grocery run before Saturday. Canned proteins, pantry staples and other shelf-stable foods are always welcome.
The timing works out well for families already out and about. The drive overlaps with Piney Grove Elementary's Fall Festival in the morning, and the sunny forecast should make for an easy stop on the way to the weekend's other events. Questions can go to the church office at (336) 993-2577.

Piney Grove Elementary Fall Festival kicks things off from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 1500 Piney Grove Road. Bring a bag of gently used shoes for the fifth grade's field trip fundraiser.
Oak Ridge Heritage Day runs 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Oak Ridge Town Park, off Linville Road, with cannon firings, cloggers, blacksmithing, and a petting zoo. This year's event also marks America's 250th anniversary.
The third annual Kernersville Renaissance Festival takes over The Brewer's Kettle, 308 E. Mountain St., starting at 1 p.m. It's family-friendly, and leashed pets are welcome.
Books & Brews Book Club meets at Gypsy Road Brewing, 1105 E. Mountain St., from 4 to 5:30 p.m. The Paddison Library hosts, and it's free to join.

Civitan Charity Golf Tournament tees off today at Pine Knolls
The Kernersville Civitan Club's 32nd Annual Charity Golf Tournament is today, Friday, Sept. 25, at Pine Knolls Golf Club, 1100 Quail Hollow Road.
The four-person Captain's Choice tournament starts with registration and lunch at 12:30 p.m., followed by a shotgun start at 1:30 p.m. Entry is $75 per player or $300 for a foursome. There will be prizes for the top teams, plus closest-to-the-pin and longest-drive contests, and mulligans will be available for anyone looking for a little help. Corporate sponsorships are also available. For details, call David Turner at (336) 687-0253.
WS/FCS names Dr. Randy Bridges interim superintendent
The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools Board of Education has chosen Dr. Randy Bridges to lead the district as interim superintendent while it searches for a permanent pick. The board approved him at its Tuesday, Sept. 22, meeting.
Bridges served as a superintendent from 1997 to 2017 in five districts across North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia, and has since worked as an interim in several others, most recently Wake County Schools. "He has a tremendous amount of educational experience in North Carolina, and I know he is the right person to lead our district at this time," said Board Chair Deanna Kaplan.
He starts Oct. 1, succeeding retiring Superintendent Don Phipps, and his contract runs through June 30, 2027. A swearing-in ceremony is planned for early next week.
