Choice Tire's fall car show rolls into VFW Post 5352 on Saturday, Oct. 3

Classic cars, barbecue and live music are headed to Edgewood Street. Choice Tire & Automotive will hold its fall car show on Saturday, Oct. 3, from noon to 4 p.m. at VFW Post 5352, 618 Edgewood St. Admission is free, but organizers are encouraging visitors to make a donation to the VFW as they come through the gate.

The show used to be held at the shop itself, at 1080 NC-66, but it simply got too big. Choice Tire hosts two shows a year, one in the spring and one in the fall, and now holds them on the VFW's much larger grounds. Co-owner Eric Englebert said the previous show at the VFW was "incredible and honestly a little overwhelming," drawing somewhere between 800 and 1,000 spectators and 304 cars. Last year's show also raised $3,700 for the post.

"The fall car show usually brings out more people and we hope we have more this time than we did last October," Englebert said.

Big Sexy's Barbecue and the locally popular Hot Dog Hideaway will be serving food, and S & P Lemonade will have drinks. The Liberty Street Band featuring Barry Cope will provide the music. There could be a bonus for fans of hometown talent, too: Kernersville's Luke Cope, who is competing on Season 30 of "The Voice," might make an appearance, though that had not been confirmed as of the Kernersville News' deadline.

The show lands on an already packed Saturday in town, with Cars & Coffee, the Triad Heart Walk, the Artisan Craft Market and Oktoberfest also on the calendar. You'll find all of them in the events list above.

Forsyth County confirms a human case of West Nile virus

Forsyth County health officials have confirmed a human case of West Nile virus, according to the Forsyth County Department of Public Health. Mosquitoes carrying the virus had already been identified in the county. The virus spreads mainly through the bite of an infected mosquito. Most people who are infected never develop symptoms, but those who do may have a fever, headache, body aches, joint pain, vomiting, diarrhea or a rash.

Forsyth County Health Director Joshua Swift is asking residents to "tip and toss" any standing water around their homes, since that is where mosquitoes breed. With warm, sunny days in the forecast, it is a good week for a quick lap around the yard to empty flower pot saucers, buckets, birdbaths, kiddie pools and anything else holding water.

Kernersville Chamber asks the community to help fund this year's teacher grants

For 23 years, the Kernersville Chamber of Commerce has helped local teachers pay for creative classroom projects, presenting 648 grants worth a total of $347,593. In its most recent round, the chamber awarded 35 grants of up to $1,000 each, and it is now asking businesses and residents to chip in for the next one.

Teachers at Cash, Caleb's Creek, Smith Farm, Kernersville, Piney Grove, Sedge Garden and Union Cross elementary schools; East Forsyth, Kernersville and Southeast middle schools; East Forsyth and Glenn high schools; and the North Carolina Leadership Academy can apply through Nov. 1. Community donations will be added to the money raised by the recent "Eating for Education" initiative, and Savage Roasters will donate customers' round-up change from Oct. 5 to 31. "Historically, teachers reach into their own pockets to provide innovative lessons for their students. This is getting harder and harder to do," said Chamber President and CEO Chris Comer. Tax-deductible contributions can be mailed to the Kernersville Chamber of Commerce, 136 E. Mountain St., Kernersville, NC 27284.

Kernersville Fire Rescue lays out its plan for the next five years

The Kernersville Fire Rescue Department has posted its Strategic Plan for 2026 to 2031 on the town's website, a roadmap for how the department will keep pace as Kernersville grows. It replaces a plan completed in 2019. Since then, Fire Rescue Chief R. Scott Alderman writes, the department has expanded its staffing, improved its facilities and training, added new technology and earned an ISO Class 1 rating, the highest fire protection rating a community can receive.

The plan was shaped by feedback from firefighters, residents, businesses, partner agencies and elected officials, and it sets six priorities: unified direction, leadership, community engagement, workforce development, equipment and facilities, and services and deployment. Goals include stronger recruiting and retention, more outreach to vulnerable residents, a look at future station and facility needs, and a review of how emergency medical service is delivered. The department also updated its mission statement to include the areas outside town limits it now serves under contract. "As our community continues to grow, increased call demand, expanding development, workforce transitions, changing expectations, and more complex service needs require us to plan proactively," Alderman wrote.
