The Carolina Classic Fair is open through Oct. 11, and Tuesday is $3 day
The rides are spinning and the corn dogs are frying in Winston-Salem. The Carolina Classic Fair opened Friday at the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds, 2825 University Parkway, and runs every day through Sunday, Oct. 11. It's about a 20-minute drive from Kernersville.
This year's theme is "Red White and Moo," a nod to America's 250th birthday and to the fair's agricultural roots. Alongside the midway, grandstand shows and blue-ribbon competitions, this year's lineup includes animal encounters with capybaras and kangaroos, plus a new round of fair food creations (yes, there's a Cap'n Crunch corn dog).
Hours. The fair is open 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday. Ticket gates close at 9 p.m.
Tickets. General admission is $10 for ages 6 and up (plus a $3 surcharge if you buy at the gate), and kids 5 and under get in free. Two deals are worth circling: admission is free before 1 p.m. Monday through Friday, and on Tuesday, Oct. 6, every admission ticket is just $3.
Rides. Unlimited-ride wristbands are $35 on weekdays. On weekends there's a $30 wristband deal: buy before noon Saturday and ride until 2 p.m., or buy before 2 p.m. Sunday and ride until 4 p.m. Individual ride tickets are 50 cents each.
Before you go, know that the fair uses a clear bag policy and walk-through metal detectors, and coolers, outside alcohol, selfie sticks and drones are among the items not allowed. Today looks cloudy and cool with a chance of light rain, so a rain jacket is a good idea if you're heading over this afternoon.

Glenn shuts out Atkins 33-0 as East Forsyth and Bishop McGuinness fall
Glenn's defense did it again Friday night. The Bobcats blanked Atkins 33-0 on the road in their conference opener for their fifth straight win and their third shutout in four games. Glenn is now 5-1 and comes home Friday to host North Davidson at 7 p.m.
East Forsyth had a tougher night in a matchup of two of the state's top teams. West Forsyth erased an early deficit and pulled away for a 35-14 win in the conference opener for both, the Eagles' second straight loss. East Forsyth (3-3) travels to Parkland on Friday.
Bishop McGuinness fell 26-15 to South Stokes at home. The Villains host North Stokes on Friday at 7 p.m.

School board candidates talk safety, teacher retention and the budget at a forum
With early voting set to open Oct. 15, candidates for the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Board of Education found a lot of common ground at a forum Thursday night. Fifteen of the 16 candidates took part, answering questions written by a high school civics class along with a few from the audience.
On safety, nearly every candidate who answered said the district's 2022 code of conduct, which was meant to take a less punitive approach to discipline, needs another look. District 2 incumbent Robert Barr called for closer ties with the sheriff's office, police and district attorney, daily screening at school entrances and more counseling support. "Most of all, listen to our students," he said. District 2 candidate Curtis Fentress pointed to phones and student mental health, calling for limits on phone access during the school day.
On keeping teachers, at-large candidate Valerie Brockenbrough highlighted the district's teacher residency program and urged the board to press state lawmakers on pay. On the budget, District 2 candidate Robert Weiss suggested the board's finance committee be made up of outside professionals rather than board members. Every Forsyth County voter can weigh in on the board's three at-large seats, and Election Day is Nov. 3.
